PLAYBOOK 3 · THE FLIGHT TO SOUTH AFRICA

Chapter 1 · A Plan of Escape

Holmes was firm in his advice to John Douglas—or rather, Birdy Edwards. The man had to disappear, and this time he had to do it properly.

Holmes: "You must leave England immediately, Douglas. Not tomorrow—tonight. Every hour you remain here, Moriarty's agents draw closer."

Douglas nodded grimly. "I know. I have made preparations for this eventuality. I have money, forged papers, and a contact in South Africa who will help me start a new life."

But I saw a shadow cross Holmes's face as Douglas explained his plan. Holmes knew something—something he was not telling us.

Chapter 2 · The Departure

That night, under cover of darkness, Douglas left Birlstone Manor. He had said goodbye to his wife, promising to send for her when he was safe.

Mrs. Douglas: (tearfully) "Promise me you will come back, John. Promise me you will be safe."

Douglas: "I promise, my love. I will find a way."

Cecil Barker accompanied Douglas to the docks, where a ship was waiting to take him to South Africa. Holmes and I watched from a distance, ensuring that no one followed him.

As the ship disappeared into the mist, Holmes turned to me, his face troubled. "He will not be safe, Watson. Professor Moriarty is not a man who leaves his work unfinished."

Chapter 3 · The Vigil

Days turned into weeks. Holmes remained in a state of restless anticipation, waiting for news from South Africa.

Holmes: "The Scowrers have agents in every port, Watson. Moriarty's network is vast. Douglas might have been safer if he had stayed here under my protection."

I could see the worry etched on my friend's face. For all his brilliance, he was powerless to protect a man who had already sailed halfway around the world.

Holmes spent his days studying maps of the South African coast, tracing possible routes and examining the shipping schedules. He was preparing for something—but I could not tell what.

Chapter 4 · The Grim News

Weeks later, a letter arrived from South Africa. Holmes tore it open with trembling hands.

As he read, his face went pale. He sank into his chair, and for a long moment, he did not speak.

Watson: "Holmes! What is it? What has happened?"

Holmes: (his voice barely a whisper) "Douglas has been lost overboard, Watson. He is presumed drowned."

The news struck me like a physical blow. After everything—all his efforts, all his sacrifices—Douglas had been caught by his enemies at last.

"It was Moriarty," Holmes said, his voice cold with anger. "He reached across the ocean to claim his victim. This is not over, Watson. It is only beginning."

Chapter 5 · Holmes's Vow

Holmes sat in silence for a long moment, staring into the fire. When he finally spoke, his voice was filled with a resolve I had never heard before.

"Professor Moriarty has won this round, Watson. He has claimed another victim. But I swear to you—the battle is not over. I will bring him down, if it is the last thing I do."

— Sherlock Holmes

I had never seen my friend so determined. The murder of Douglas had made the conflict with Moriarty personal. It was no longer a matter of justice—it was a matter of vengeance.

"But what can we do?" I asked. "Moriarty is protected by his reputation. No one will believe he is a criminal mastermind."

Holmes: "Then we will find proof, Watson. We will tear apart his carefully constructed web of lies. And when we have enough evidence, we will destroy him."

Chapter 6 · The Return to Baker Street

We returned to Baker Street in somber spirits. The case of the Valley of Fear had taken a tragic turn, and I could see the weight of it pressing down on Holmes.

Yet even in defeat, Holmes did not rest. He spent the following weeks investigating Moriarty's network, gathering evidence that would eventually lead to the professor's downfall.

"Every criminal has a weakness," Holmes told me one evening. "Moriarty's weakness is his arrogance. He believes himself untouchable. And that is exactly what will bring him down."

As I watched my friend work with renewed determination, I knew that the battle was far from over. The Valley of Fear had claimed another victim—but the war against Moriarty had only just begun.
